FAQ

Q: Where should the tubes be located?

A: To maximise their efficiency, the tubes should be on a north-facing roof. If located on a roof facing east or west, they will lose about 10 to 15 per cent efficiency, Alternatively, they can be placed on a north, south or east roof on an angle frame, to pitch them north.

Q: How big are the tubes and tank?

A: Refer to the Systems page for tank and tube dimensions.

Q: Will my new solar hot water be on off peak electricity?

A: Yes. The electric tank works just like the existing electric storage system, but the electric element will come on if there has been little solar gain throughout the day.

Q: Can the electric element be switched off?

A: Yes, it can. However it is advisable not to switch it off unless you are away from home for an extended period. If switched off, the system must be given adequate time to re-heat, preferably overnight.

Q: Will my system overheat?

A: No. A ZEN solar hot water system has built-in safety devices, which disengages the pump when it reaches 70°C. If the tank’s temperature does rise above this, a PTR (pressure, temperature, relief) valve will open and release water into the system.

Q: Can the tubes get too hot?

A: ZEN’s solar tubes can handle static temperatures of more than 200°C.

Q: Should I cover my tubes in summer, to reduce solar absorption because the system is too efficient?

A: No. A ZEN solar hot water system has built-in safety devices to ensure it cannot overheat, as stated in Q5.

Q: Does the system have frost protection?

A: Yes. A ZEN system can sense a drop in temperature, and circulates water through the tubes to eliminate the system freezing.

Q: What is the warranty on a ZEN solar hot water system?

A: Solar heat tubes – 10 years

    Solar manifold – 10 years

Stainless storage tanks – 10 years

Vitreous enamel tanks – 5 years

    Pump – 2 years

All other parts – 1 year

Q: How much will a solar hot water system save me?

A: A solar hot water system will save up to 80 per cent on your hot water heating costs.
