Adelaide businessman Richard Turner was watching his kids play in their backyard cubby one evening back in 2003 as the sun was setting. As he watched he thought it would be great to put a light in, so they could keep playing as it got dark. He decided solar power would be simpler than running underground power, so he went to buy a small solar system for the cubby. What he discovered was a myriad of complexity and confusion.

There were so many different kinds of panels, inverters, components and options that he wondered how anyone ever managed to use solar to power a house. So in 2004 he started ZEN – a company dedicated to taking the guesswork out of solar Home Energy Systems.

ZEN has quickly become Australia’s favourite Home Energy Systems brand. Richard himself has been named Ernst and Young’s 2010 Australian Entrepreneur of the year in the clean tech category and in 2010 ZEN was named South Australia’s Fastest Growing Company. In May 2011 they were identified as Australia’s seventh fastest growing company.
